Canada / USA Cross Border Medical Transport

Every year, hundreds of thousands of Canadian and American visitors cross the Canada / USA border. Whether travelling as tourists, for work, or just a quick trip across the border, patients and families can find themselves in need of cross border medical transport from Canada to the USA, or from the USA back to Canada.

The medical transport teams at Western Pacific Emergency Response Ltd (WPEMS) are experts in handling cross border medical transfers by ground ambulance

  • Our most common routes are from Washington, Oregon and California, back to British Columbia and Alberta.
  • WPEMS ambulances have travelled all over Canada and the USA. Our longest ground ambulance transfer from was from Tucson, Arizona to Halifax, Nova Scotia. WPEMS ambulances have transferred patients from as far away as San Diego and Palm Springs California back to Canada.
During a long distance ground ambulance transport, the patient is under constant Paramedic care. Depending on the length of the journey, and the care needs of the patient, we may recommend that a Registered Nurse accompany the patient, if necessary. A medical escort would be organized by WPEMS coordinators and works along side the Paramedics during the transfer.

Continuous Paramedic Care and Long-Haul Medical Transport Support

During a long distance ground ambulance transport, the patient is under constant Paramedic care. Depending on the length of the journey, and the care needs of the patient, we may recommend that a Registered Nurse accompany the patient, if necessary. A medical escort would be organized by WPEMS coordinators and works along side the Paramedics during the transfer.

For long haul ambulance transfers, our Paramedic teams change out along the way, as necessary, to ensure a safe and reliable journey for the patient.

Reasons for using a long distance ground ambulance medical transport across borders include:

  • Access to ongoing medical care. WPEMS often transfers patients to the USA from Canada who require cancer care and treatment at private medical facilities in the USA, treatment that is not available in Canada or is delayed.
  • Lack of insurance coverage. Many Canadian snowbirds travel to the USA each year without travel medical insurance. Caught in unexpected situations, a ground ambulance from the USA back to Canada is an affordable alternative to the high cost of a private air ambulance charter.
  • Quick trips without insurance. This is the most common occurrence, when Canadian travelers slip across the border to Montana, or Washington state, often only for the day. When an emergency occurs the patient is hospitalized without insurance, where hospital bills in the USA can quickly add up. WPEMS ground ambulance teams will retrieve the patient from the USA and transfer them safely back to Canada.
  • Visitors to Canada. Most American based health plans do not cover out-of-country expenses for American visitors to Canada. Travel insurance plans purchased in the USA can also have very low dollar limits, and despite the perception that medical care is free in Canada, this is not the case for visitors who arrive here and become ill or injured. By using a cross border medical transport from WPEMS, we quickly ensure that American visitors to Canada who require medical transport, can safely be transferred back to Bellingham or Seattle for ongoing medical care under their normal healthcare coverage plans.
