Battery Fire in Yoho National Park: Rapid Medical Standby on the BC/Alberta Border
A Western Pacific Emergency Response Case Study
During a weather event, water accidentally entered a BC Hydro battery energy storage facility in Yoho National Park in Field, British Columbia. As a result of the water ingress, the batteries exploded and caught fire, resulting in significant damage to the client facility, with the potential to release toxic substances into the surrounding park environment.
BC Hydro commissioned the Prime Contractor GFL Environmental to mobilize their spill response team to the site. Due to the remote location in Yoho National Park, along the BC / Alberta Border, an Emergency Transport Vehicle with Advanced First Aid attendant was required to be on standby at the site, before work could commenced.
In conjunction with the hiring client, BC Hydro, and the Prime Contractor, GFL, it was determined that WPEMS would dispatch a 4×4 Industrial Ambulance with a Paramedic team to standby during high risk operations.
The next day, WPEMS Paramedics responded the site and staged our private ambulance at the entrance to the site, providing access control, safety overwatch, and emergency medical response. Because the site was on BC Hydro property, WPEMS dispatched a trained medic with the required WPP, PSSP and STC certifications, required for any personnel accessing a BC Hydro site.
As the project progressed and the major chemical hazards were mitigated, contained and removed, we subsequently downgraded and modified our response to a single ETV (Emergency Transport Vehicle) and WorkSafe BC Certified Advanced First Aid Attendant.
