1L130 Transmission System Upgrade – Remote EMS Support for BC Hydro

Western Pacific Emergency Response Ltd completes work on major transmission line project, working with BC Hydro on the replacement of the 25kv 1L130 transmission line from Port McNeil to Port Alice on Northern Vancouver Island.

As part of the 1L130 25kv transmission line project, WPEMS supplied two 4×4 Industrial Ambulances and Paramedic crews to BC Hydro, providing on site advanced emergency medical care and EMS standby in an extremely hazardous and remote environment.

Located more than 500 KM from the closest major trauma centre, Port Alice is situated on the most isolated end of northern Vancouver Island. Mobilized from our Nanaimo base, WPEMS paramedics worked in conditions involving extreme terrain, mountainous switchback roads, and all weather conditions from winter rains to summer heat.

Hazards encountered during the project included working around energized electrical equipment, helicopters, high angles and extreme heights. WPEMS Paramedics and 4×4 industrial ambulances were stationed at strategic points along the right-of-way to ensure that our Paramedics were able to rapidly respond to any medical emergency.

WPEMS industrial ambulances are remote access medical units that are specially equipped to handle extreme terrain, in high hazard, zero fail environments. “Our Paramedics and ambulances have to be able to rapidly access an incident in the most challenging of circumstances, where we are quite literally hundreds of kilometers from the closest major trama centre in Victoria” according to Graham Williamson, CEO of Western Pacific Emergency Response.

“Zero fail means that we are in a constant state of being rescue ready. Due to the high hazard nature of this project, and the tight timelines involved, our customer, BC Hydro, required 100% uptime from Western Pacific Emergency Response Ltd on this project.”.
