Western Canada Medical Transport BC

Western Canada Medical Transport

Western Pacific Emergency Response (WPEMS) provides non-emergency medical transport for patients who are travelling between medical facilities throughout Western Canada, including in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Our medical transport teams are based in Vancouver, Kamloops and Calgary, providing WPEMS Paramedics with full coverage for medical transport across Western Canada. Non-emergency medical transport via private ground ambulance means that while the patient is still under the care of highly trained and licensed Paramedics, the medical transport is booked on a pre-scheduled basis, and planned in advance. We do not transport patients who need higher level of care, or for those who need emergency care.

Pre-Scheduled Non-Emergency Medical Transport Across Western Canada

Examples of pre-scheduled, non-emergency patient transfers and medical transport that WPEMS provides in Western Canada include:
  • Medical transport when leaving a healthcare facility in Alberta, travelling back to Saskatchewan or Alberta  (ie transfer from hospital to home province)
  • Medical transport for ongoing medical care in a different province or region
  • Medical transport and non-emergency ambulance transport between skilled nursing facilities in Western Canada. For example, moving a loved one from Red Deer to Kelowna.
  • Inter-regional transfers from one health authority, to another health authority, for instance, a patient moving from a hospital in Fraser Health in New Westminster to a hospital in Edmonton, Alberta.
  • Palliative care transfers for end-of-life care when a family member or patient wishes to move closer to home.
  • Long distance medical transport between British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the USA. WPEMS ambulances routinely transport patients from Canada to the USA, including Washington, Oregon, California and Montana.
As a pre-scheduled, non-emergency medical transport company in Western Canada, we ensure that when your appointment is booked, your ambulance and paramedic team will arrive at the scheduled time without interruption or delay.

Air Ambulance Alternative in Western Canada

Private Air Ambulance

A private air ambulance medevac is a passenger plane that is converted over by the aviation company who is often hired by a charter broker. In Western Canada, companies that advertise themselves as an “Private Air Ambulance” will hire the aviation company who installs a medical stretcher into the plane by removing passenger seats.

Because the air ambulance is hired on an ad-hoc, or charter basis, a private air ambulance medevac in Western Canada can be extremely expensive, and often unaffordable for many families, especially senior citizens who are moving between skilled nursing facilities on a fixed budget. For example, and air ambulance from Vancouver to Calgary can cost over $25,000 one way, and an Air Ambulance from Kelowna to Edmonton can cost $20,000 or more.

A long distance ground ambulance transport from WPEMS provides an alternative to the high cost of hiring a medical transport plane. WPEMS paramedic crews provide the same level of patient care and comfort as would be found on an air ambulance, yet at a fraction of the cost.

Common routes that are travelled by WPEMS private ground ambulances on long distance medical transports include:

  • Vancouver and Fraser Valley to Interior Health Region (Kelowna, Kamloops, Vernon)
  • Interior Health to Northern British Columbia
  • Kamloops, Kelowna and Vernon to Calgary, Edmonton and Red Deer
  • Ambulance from Edmonton to Saskatoon, or private ambulance from Calgary to Regina
  • Victoria, Nanaimo, Comox and Campbell River to Vancouver
  • Medical transports between British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan
  • Medical transport from Seattle to Vancouver, or any point in the USA to Canada
